Bangkok--May 29--MFA
The Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will organise an “ASEAN+3 Forum on Nuclear Energy Safety” on 16-17 June 2008 at Plaza Athenee Hotel in Bangkok. About 100 experts on nuclear energy development from ASEAN, China, Japan and Korea, as well as representatives from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will participate in the Forum.
This Forum aims at promoting awareness and understanding of nuclear energy safety by tapping region’s experiences and expertise on nuclear energy development. Currently, development and operation of nuclear power plants in East Asia have been progressing. China has 11 nuclear power plants in operation, while Japan and Korea have 55 and 20 nuclear power plants, respectively. Some ASEAN Member Countries have also announced policy to develop nuclear energy to meet with rising energy demand. To build public confidence on the use of nuclear power, the Forum will also discuss on how to develop best practices to ensure nuclear energy safety in East Asia.
This Forum reflects a determination of Thailand and ASEAN in addressing the issue of global warming. It will also help strengthening the role of Thailand as the next ASEAN Chairman in promoting greater co-operation in the field of energy between ASEAN and its strategic partners in East Asia, namely China, Japan and Korea.
