On 1 June 2008, the first day of his official visit to the United Kingdom, Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama visited Wat Buddhapadipa in London. Under the Royal Patronage, this temple was the first Buddhist temple in the United Kingdom and was established with the objective of creating a centre for the dissemination of theoretical and practical Buddhist teachings in Europe.
At the temple, the Minister met with Dhammaduta Monks as well as visited the Sunday school teaching Thai language, culture and customs located on the grounds of the temple and supported by the Royal Thai Embassy in London.
The Minister also met with members the Thai Women’s Network in Europe, which has just held its ninth annual meeting in London. He assured the Network of the importance attached by the Thai Government and the Foreign Ministry to strengthening Thai communities overseas as well as to the provision of assistance and protection of Thai nationals abroad.
In this connection, the Minister informed the Network of the Foreign Ministry’s initiative to create the Racha Maitree Association in Germany to help Thai’s living in that country. If successful, this concept would also be extended to other countries with sizable Thai communities. At the same time, in Thailand, the Ministry will also spearhead the establishment of the Pracha Maitree Centre or Citizen Legal Advice Bureau to provide help to Thai’s on various matters, especially those related with travelling overseas.
