Bangkok--June 3--MFA
1. On his first official visit to the UK, H.E. Mr. Noppadon Pattama, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and the Rt. Hon. David Miliband, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs:
? reaffirmed the excellent relations between the two countries, including the cordial ties between the two Royal Families.
? welcomed the return of democratically elected government in Thailand.
? resolved to further build on the more than US$7 billion of bilateral trade (goods and services) by encouraging an increase in high-level business visits.
? had a full exchange of views on the situation in Burma/Myanmar, noting the crucial role of ASEAN in ensuring that the understandings reached at the ASEAN/UN International Pledging Conference in Yangon, Myanmar of 25 May were fully and quickly implemented. On the wider political situation in Burma/Myanmar, the two ministers agreed that they would want to see democracy, human rights and improved quality of life in Burma/Myanmar.
? noted that Thailand would chair ASEAN from July 2008 to December 2009 and, in co-ordination with the Secretary General, would aim to make the organisation more relevant, outward-looking and people-centred .
? agreed to establish a Joint Plan of Action for Thailand and the UK at the earliest opportunity to complement and reinforce co-operation in all important areas of the bilateral relationship.
? agreed to broaden people-to-people contacts, particularly in the field of education and culture and, in this context, confirmed their intention to resolve the appropriate legal status of the British Council in Thailand.
? agreed to sign a Convention on the Avoidance of Double Taxation between Thailand and the United Kingdom in the near future.
2. Both ministers agreed to keep in close contact on a regular basis. Foreign Minister Pattama extended an invitation to Foreign Secretary Miliband to pay a visit to Thailand on mutually convenient dates.
