Bangkok--Jun 6--MFA
On 5 June 2008 in Berlin, Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama held officials talks with Dr. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Deputy Chancellor and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Deputy Chancellor welcomed the return to Thailand of a democratically-elected Government and looked forward to cooperating ever closer with the Royal Thai Government.
Among the many issues discussed, both sides agreed to work on a joint plan of action, which would serve as an umbrella framework for closer collaboration between Thailand and Germany in all fields, including trade, investment, education and energy. In this connection, the officials of both sides were tasked with working out the details and scope of the joint plan of action. Cooperation in the field of renewable energy was also discussed, particularly given Germany’s experience and expertise in wind, solar and biomass energy. In this regard, Foreign Minister Noppadon invited German companies to undertake projects in the Kingdom under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). He also conveyed to the German side the wish of the Thai Ministry of Education to conclude with its German counterpart an MOU on cooperation in the field of scientific research and technical development. Both sides also exchanged views on regional issues, including the situation in Myanmar and China, as well as Thailand’s goals and objectives when it assumes the ASEAN Chairmanship this July.
On the same day, Foreign Minister called on Mr. Michael Glos, Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, who had recently led a business delegation to Thailand. Both sides agreed that the Second Thai-German Joint Economic Commission (JEC) should be convened as soon as possible to further promote the economic partnership between both countries. The Foreign Minister also met with Mr. Erich Stather, State Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Economics Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Together they signed the MOU on Trilateral Cooperation which would provide a framework for partnership cooperation between Thailand and Germany with the countries in the Mekong region as well as other parts of the world.
