On 24 August 2008, a reception was held at the Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Myanmar. Guests of honour attending the event included H.E. General Thein Sein, Prime Minister of the Union of Myanmar, Foreign Minister U Nyan Win and Foreign Minister Tej Bunnag.

In his remarks at the event, Foreign Minister Tej said that as neighbours, the chronicle of relations between Thailand and Myanmar began long before 24 August 1948. For centuries, their two peoples have been bound together by common religious beliefs, shared culture and traditions. Through constant changes in the political and economic landscape, Theravada Buddhism has been, and remains, one of the strongest ties between their peoples.

Among the several commemorative events and activities planned to commemorate this event, the Foreign Minister highlighted the construction of decorative posts and a chain fence around the two Maha Bodhi trees, and the installation of a commemorative plaque at Mahapasana Cave. The two Maha Bodhi trees were planted by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand during their State Visit in March 1960.

Looking ahead, Thailand and Myanmar will be increasingly intertwined — not only as neighbours but also as members of the same ASEAN family. Thailand and Myanmar therefore have both opportunities to explore and challenges to address together.

Earlier that day, Foreign Minister visited the Naga Hlaingu Monastry to offer alms. He also paid homage to the Kaba Aye Pagoda, visited the two Maha Bodhi Trees planted by Their Majesties the King and Queen of Thailand, presented a contribution to the International Institute of Abhidharmma and the Central Women’s Hospital.
