On 8 October 2008, Mr. Somchai Wongsawat, Prime Minister and Defense Minister, hosted a reception at Vithes Samosorn of the Foreign Ministry for the Diplomatic Corps based in Thailand. The event was well attended by members of the Diplomatic Corps, comprising Ambassadors, Consuls-General and Heads of International Organizations. High-ranking officials of the Foreign Ministry also participated in the reception.
Prime Minister Somchai gave welcoming remarks to the Diplomatic Corps and expressed his hope to work closely with them in order to promote Thailand’s stature in the international community. He also expressed his appreciation for their understanding of what Thailand is going through at the moment.
In his speech, the Prime Minister stressed three important points:
1). Government’s commitment to ensure confidence in Thailand’s political system which will continue to abide by parliamentary democratic rule, to resolve domestic problems through the democratic process, and to do its best to live up to the wishes of the Thai people.
2). Government’s intentions to restore Thailand’s economic dynamism by boosting economy so as to minimize the risks arising from the present global financial volatility, to pursue open, market-friendly trade and investment policies, and to restore business confidence by providing an investment friendly climate and welcoming foreign investments in Thailand.
3). Thailand’s continuity to respect all its existing commitments and obligations under international law, the United Nations Charter, ASEAN as well as bilateral commitments.
In addition, Prime Minister Somchai reiterated Thailand’s readiness to host the ASEAN and other related Summits this December. As ASEAN Chair, he also hoped to effectively lead ASEAN to a more prosperous and cohesive Southeast Asia.
Prime Minister also expressed his wish to use the occasions of attending a series of upcoming Summit meetings to work with other regional leaders in addressing the current international financial crisis and share with them Thailand’s experiences of the 1997 Asian financial crisis and the lessons learnt.
