On 8 October 2008, the Ambassadors and Charge d'Affaires of ASEAN member countries to Thailand paid a courtesy call on Mr. Somchai Wongsawat, the new Prime Minister and Defence Minister, to congratulate him on his assumption of office at Bua Kaew Room, Ministry of Foreign Affairs. .
The Prime Minister thanked the Ambassadors and Charge d'Affaires and expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to meet with them, as the relations between Thailand and fellow ASEAN member countries are especially close. He informed them that he would visit all ASEAN countries to introduce himself and discuss issues of mutual interest in order to enhance cordial relations between both sides.
Prime Minister Somchai also informed the Ambassadors and Charge d'Affaires that his government would be able to implement its policies now that he has delivered his Government’s policy statement to Parliament. He also reassured the envoys that his government would work to resolve the current political issues through democratic process without violence.
The envoys thanked the Prime Minister and congratulated him on his assumption of office. They affirmed their readiness to welcome his visit to their countries and expressed hope for closer relations with Thailand, which would further strengthen development in the region. They also expressed confidence that Thailand, under Prime Minister Somchai’s leadership, would be successful both in peacefully resolving its internal political problems and in its role as ASEAN chairman.
