On 9 October 2008, Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of ASEAN, paid a courtesy call on Mr.Sompong Amornvivat, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Both sides discussed Thailand’s preparations for the 14th ASEAN Summit and related meetings to be held in Bangkok from 15-18 December 2008.
The DPM/FM reaffirmed Thailand’s readiness to host the Summit,and that Thailand will work closely with the ASEAN Secretariat to achieve the goals set out. The DPM/FM informed the Secretary-General that the Bill on the Implementation of the ASEAN Charter has been approved by the Thai Parliament in September 2008. Upon publication in the Royal Gazette, it would come into law, at which point the Thai Government would immediately be able to submit the instrument of ratification to the ASEAN Secretary-General.
The Secretary-General noted that if the ASEAN Charter is ratified by all ASEAN members 30 days before the 14th ASEAN Summit, the Charter would enter into force during the ASEAN Summit in Bangkok.
