On 10 October 2008, Mr. Victorio Mario Jose Taccetti, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina, paid a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mr. Sompong Amornvivat on the occasion of his visit to participate in the political consultation of the Thailand-Argentina Joint Commission (JC).
During the call, the Argentine Vice-Minister stressed the economic and political importance of Asia in the international arena, and reaffirmed that Argentina stood ready to strengthen bilateral ties with Thailand by using the JC framework. Moreover, he noted, relations between Southeast Asia and Latin America could be further strengthened by cooperation between ASEAN and MERCOSUR (Mercado Comun del Sur). The two groupings will hold their first ministerial meeting on 24 November 2008 in Brasilia.
The Argentine Vice-Minister also expressed his sympathies regarding the political situation in Bangkok and the hope that Thailand would be able to resolve the problem peacefully.
