Thai PM reaffirms Thai-Cambodian border issues to be resolved peacefully

On 14 October 2008, Mr. Somchai Wongsawat, Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, gave a press conference after the inter-agency meeting on the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border in the area adjacent to the Temple of Phra Viharn. Gist as follows:

1. Prime Minister Somchai stated that Thai troops currently deployed in the area are in Thai territory to safeguard the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also affirmed that Thailand would never violate the sovereignty of a neighbouring country and that it would not be the first to resort to the use of force.

2. The Thai Prime Minister affirmed Thailand’s determination to resolve its boundary problem with Cambodia through bilateral diplomatic negotiations and the Kingdom’s wish to co-exist peacefully with all its neighbouring countries. He further noted that the military of both sides have been in contact with one another and that they have agreed to convene a special meeting of the Regional Border Committee (RBC) on 21 October 2008, which will be preceded by a meeting at the working level of the RBC on 15 October 2008.

3. He emphasized that Thailand and Cambodia remain good friends. The situation in the area adjacent to the Temple of Phra Viharn remains stable and that there has been use of force.

4. In response to a question whether Thai nationals would be evacuated from Cambodia, Prime Minister Somchai said that the current situation did not warrant such action; nevertheless, coordination had already been made with the Royal Thai Air Force in case it becomes necessary.
