Ambassadors concurred with Thailand in resolving border dispute with Cambodia bilaterally

On 15 October 2008, Mr.Sompong Amornvivat, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, met with Chinese Ambassador, Mr. Zhang Jiuhuan, French Ambassador, Mr. Laurent Bili, British Ambassador, Mr. Quinton Quayle, Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Kyoji Komachi, and Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Mr. Salim Issa Ali Al Kattam Al Zaabi respectively at the Foreign Ministry.The Ambassadors paid their courtesy calls to congratulate DPM/FM upon his assumption of office.

The Foreign Minister, in addition to reviewing their bilateral relations and good cooperation in various areas, took the occasions in explaining to the Ambassadors the situation along the border between Thailand and Cambodia. He reaffirmed Thailand’s unwavering position to resort to existing bilateral mechanisms and resolve the issue peacefully, with which China, France, the UK, Japan, and UAE concurred. DPM/FM Sompong responded to the Ambassadors’ concern that the rising tension at the Thai-Cambodian border had been eased and Thailand would never be the one to start using violent means. He also informed the Ambassadors that the Thai Prime Minister’s statement to resolve the situation with Phnom Penh peacefully was welcomed by Mr. Hor Nam Hong, his Cambodian counterpart.

The Ambassadors were concern over the rising tension over the border dispute but expressed their gladness that the tension had been eased. They had understood Thailand’s position in this matter and had concurred on Thailand’s position to solve the dispute. They all hoped that the two countries can settle the issue peacefully and, if possible, bilaterally
