Israel stands ready to support Thailand’s ASEAN chairmanship

On 29 October 2008, Mrs. Yael Rubinstein, Israeli Ambassador to Thailand, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Sompong Amornvivat, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Thailand upon the latter’s assumption of office at the Foreign Ministry.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister informed the Israeli Ambassador about the development in solving border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia and that on 28 October 2008, the Thai Parliament already approved provisional arrangements as a negotiating framework between both sides. Foreign Minister Sompong also reiterated Thailand’s position to solve the problem through bilateral mechanisms.

Both sides also exchanged views on Thailand’s readiness to chair 14th ASEAN Summit in this coming December. In this regard, Ambassador Yael affirmed Israel’s support for Thailand’s ASEAN chairmanship.

The Israeli Ambassador took the opportunity to invite Foreign Minister Sompong to deliver a speech for the meeting of Israeli Ambassadors to all Asia-Pacific countries, hosted by the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok during 21-23 November 2008.
