Thailand-Philippines relations flourished

On 29 December 2008, Mr. Alberto Catmaitan Romulo, Foreign Minister of the Philippines, who was on his unofficial visit to Thailand, paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya to congratulate him on his assumption of office at the Foreign Ministry.

Foreign Minister Kasit welcomed his Filipino counterpart and emphasized Thailand’s readiness to chair the 14th ASEAN Summit in Bangkok which would either be held during 20 — 22 February or 27 February — 1 March 2009. The significant documents and agreements which are scheduled to be signed during the Summit would be taken for Cabinet’s decision at the earliest opportunity.

The Thai Foreign Minister also took this opportunity to ask the Philippines to support Thailand regarding Myanmar issue and ASEAN Human Rights Body, as well as the support for bilateral talks between Thailand and Cambodia to solve the border dispute. The Filipino Foreign Minister agreed with both issues and expressed his readiness to further cooperate with Thailand on the matters accordingly.

The Filipino Foreign Minister also stated that the celebration of 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Thailand and the Philippines in 2009 and the cultural related events would further strengthen the two countries’ ties.
