Myanmar Deputy Foreign Minister paid a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs

On 12 January 2009, Mr. U Kyaw Thu, Myanmar Deputy Foreign Minister, paid a courtesy call on Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya during his study trip to Thailand as the president of the Tripartite Core Group (TCG) to observe disaster management in Thailand.

Foreign Minister Kasit enquired about the progress of coordinating the assistance from ASEAN and the international community to the victims of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar. He also discussed with Myanmar Deputy Foreign Minister on Thailand’s role on the restoration of the affected areas and the rehabilitation of people’s standard of living, especially in providing education and food for children and juveniles.

In addition, both sides exchanged views about the overall bilateral relations, including the cooperation regarding the registration of Myanmar workers in Thailand to avoid and prevent transnational crime, such as human trafficking. They also discussed about people-to-people relations between the two countries and Thailand’s assistance for the restoration of an ancient temple in Myanmar. In this connection, Foreign Minister Kasit has invited Thai people to participate in the donation for the aforesaid cause through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon.
