ASEAN meetings kick off in Cha-am

ASEAN Senior Officials, Senior Economic Officials and Director-Generals held parallel meetings on 26 February 2009 to discuss preparations for 14th ASEAN Summit meetings at the ministerial and leaders’ levels, according to Mr. Tharit Charungvat, Director-General of the Department of Information and Foreign Ministry Spokesman.

Starting at 09:30 hrs, the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting, chaired by Mr. Virasakdi Futrakul, Thailand’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, discussed three main issues, namely, the programme of activities for the ASEAN ministers and leaders, the indicative list of topics for ministers’ discussions, and draft documents to be adopted or signed by the ASEAN leaders or ministers.

The three and a half days ahead would be packed with various activities, Mr. Tharit said. For the Thai delegation alone, more than 20 activities have been scheduled. These include, in addition to the various ASEAN meetings, bilateral meetings of the prime minister, the foreign minister and the commerce minister with their respective counterparts.
