4th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Summit

  • The 4th Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle Summit, the first of all ASEAN Summit programmes, was convened on 28 February, 2009 at Dusit Thani Hua Hin Hotel, Cha-am, Phetchaburi, back-to-back with the 14th ASEAN Summit.
  • The Summit was attended by H.E. Dato Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, H.E. Mr. Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand and H.E. Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyonon, the President of the Republic of Indonesia who also chaired the Meeting. Mr. Kuroda, the President of ADB and H.E. Mr. Surin Pitsuwan, the ASEAN Secretary-General also participated.
  • The objectives of the Meeting was to review progress in cooperation in six areas including trade and investment, infrastructure and transportation, tourism, halal products and services, human resources development and agriculture, agro-industry & environment as well as the development prospects in the IMT-GT Sub-region
  • The leaders endorsed the Joint Statement which attached an importance to:
  • the potential and the development strengths of the sub-region to assist member countries overcome the global economic crises
  • the issues of food security, volatility of energy prices and climate change
  • the synergy between IMT-GT and the ASEAN Community.
  • the urgent development of the five Connectivity Corridors as stipulated in the Roadmap and enhancement of its implementation of programmes and projects as well as the acceleration of infrastructure development including maritime and aviation linkages.
  • promotion of public and private partnership
  • the active participation of the Chief Ministers and Governors in promoting trade, investment and tourism through the Governor’s Forum
  • strengthening partnership with ADB and exploring cooperation with other development partners

At the Meeting, the Thai Prime Minister reassured Thailand’s commitment to the IMT-GT Cooperation and wished to see IMT-GT an example of sub-regional cooperation frameworks to complement the ASEAN Community. He also encouraged the linkage between IMT-GT and the other sub-regional forums including ACMECS, GMS, and BIMSTEC as well as cooperation in energy area and utilization of resources for the welfare of the IMT-GT peoples.
