On 10 April 2009, the Third Meeting of the ASEAN Coordinating Council was chaired by H.E. Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and was attended by ASEAN Foreign Ministers, senior officials and Secretary-General of the ASEAN, at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort Hotel in Pattaya, Chonburi, Thailand. The Meeting considered the programme of activities as well as the indicative list of topics of discussion for the Related Summits to be held on 10-12 April 2009 in Pattaya. The Meeting also endorsed 24 outcome documents to be signed, adopted or noted by Leaders or the Economic Ministers.

The Meeting was briefed by H.E. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN Secretary-General, on the preparation for the ASEAN Global Dialogue scheduled on 12 April 2009 at the Centara Grand Hotel in Bangkok. It would also be the first major economic gathering after the G-20 Summit in London. Heads of various international organizations including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP) are invited to share their views on the current global economic and financial crisis. More than 500 business leaders, media and academia have also confirmed participation. It would therefore provide a good opportunity for ASEAN to showcase ASEAN as a mature organization and East Asia as a mature region.

The Meeting took note of the progress made in the follow-up to the 14th ASEAN Summit and the implementation of the ASEAN Charter, in particular the establishment of an ASEAN human rights body (AHRB) and the Committee of Permanent Representatives (CPRs) to ASEAN in Jakarta. In this connection, the Meeting welcomed the appointment of H.E. Ambassador Piamsak Milintachinda as the Thai Permanent Representative ad interim to ASEAN.

Malaysia briefed the Meeting on the preparation for the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit scheduled on 1-2 June 2009 in Jeju Island, Republic of Korea with the theme “Partnership for Real, Friendship for Good.”
