Foreign Minister Kasit holds bilateral meetings in Hanoi and Phnom Penh

On 29 May 2009 at 13.45 hours, during his press briefing on the result of the 9th ASEM Foreign Ministers Meeting in Hanoi and the 17th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting (AEMM) in Phnom Penh held during 25-26 May and 27-28 May 2009, respectively, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya gave a comprehensive summary of the results of his bilateral talks with 13 other foreign ministers and head of delegations, including the EU Special Envoy for Myanmar. They include, in chronological order:

During the ASEM FM Meeting in Hanoi

  • Mr. Jan Kohout, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic (Presidency of the European Union)
  • Mr. Salman Bashir, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan
  • Mr. Alexander Stubb, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland
  • Mr. Dirk Achten, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Belgium
  • Mr. Luis Amado, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Portugal

During the AEMM in Phnom Penh

Foreign Minister Kasit noted that all were interested in the political situation in Thailand and that he had briefed them on current developments especially progress on political reform, as well as reiterated the government’s readiness to work for the people and to fulfill its commitment with the international community be they on bilateral, multilateral, or regional frameworks. Also discussed were ways and means to strengthen cooperation between Thailand and its friend in the international community. They include discussion of Thailand’s stimulus packages, promotion of alternative and renewable energy use, cooperation on research and development, as well as trilateral cooperation. During these occasions, the Foreign Minister also responded to queries on issues of illegal migrants and illegal labor, saying that Thailand is determined to continue working with the governments of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the Union of Myanmar to solve this problem guided by humanitarian and safety concern for these people.
