On 2 July 2009, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya presided over the seminar “Incredible Indian Market: Golden Opportunities for Thai Business in Time of Global Economic Downturn”, at the Amari Watergate Hotel in Bangkok.

In his opening remarks, Foreign Minister Kasit emphasized why the Indian market was important to Thailand: India is a full democracy which supports the free market system; it is strong in education and modern technology, particularly information technology. These factors have driven the development of the country’s human resources, which has made the Indian market very attractive. This coincides with Thailand’s policy to develop new markets for trade and investment for greater balance and to reduce overdependence on a few specific markets.

Foreign Minister Kasit further said that the government sector should play a proactive role in providing information on markets and business culture in that country, as well as cooperating with the private sector to create more opportunities for trade and investment amidst the current global economic crisis.

The seminar was organized by the Royal Thai Embassy in New Delhi on 2-3 July 2009, to help boost trade and investment in the Indian market, focusing on 7 sectors — automobile parts, construction materials, logistics, retail goods, home furnishings and kitchenware, the spa and restaurant business, and tourism.
