Officials discuss outcome documents of 42nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting

The Joint Communiqu.. of the 42nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting is likely to focus on progress made in the implementation of the ASEAN Charter and the promotion of cooperation among ASEAN Member States and its Dialogue Partners in addressing regional and global problems, says Vitavas Srivihok, Director-General of Thailand’s ASEAN Affairs Department.

Speaking after chairing today’s meeting of ASEAN Directors-General to discuss preparations on substantive matters for the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting and related meetings scheduled for 19-23 July 2009 in Phuket, Mr. Srivihok said the progress made in establishing an ASEAN human rights body would also be reported in the communiqu...

The situations in Myanmar and in the Korean Peninsula may also be mentioned in the document, Mr. Srivihok added.

In line with past practice, the Joint Communiqu? is expected to be a main outcome document of the 42nd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM), an annual gathering of the 10 foreign ministers of ASEAN Member Countries, to be followed by ministerial meetings of ASEAN and its Dialogue Partners and ASEAN Regional Forum.

“The Meeting of ASEAN Senior Officials is now finalizing the communiqu?, which will be later submitted to the Foreign Ministers for consideration”.

Asked about attendance, the Director-General said all foreign ministers of the participating countries had confirmed they would attend, with the exception of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Canada, Mongolia, and Papua New Guinea, all of which would be represented at a lower level.
