The Release of Mr. John William Yettaw

World News Tuesday August 18, 2009 15:06 —Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Royal Thai Government welcomes the Government of the Union of Myanmar’s recent decision to release Mr. John William Yettaw, who was sentenced to 7-year imprisonment of hard labour in violation of Myanmar’s relevant laws and acts.

Thailand views that such leniency of Myanmar, based on a humanitarian reason, is a positive development. It has not only enabled Mr. Yettaw to reunite with his beloved family, but also demonstrated Myanmar’s willingness to constructively engage with the international community.

Thailand also wishes that the Government of the Union of Myanmar considers taking a similar approach by granting amnesty and full freedom to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
