Foreign Minister Kasit joins working lunch on “Doing Business in Bangladesh” with representatives from public and private sectors

On 31 August 2009, Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, took part in a working lunch on “Doing Business in Bangladesh” together with representatives from public and private sectors at the Foreign Ministry. The participants exchanged views and discussed problems on trade barriers and opportunities in Bangladesh. Gist as follows:

Foreign Minister Kasit gave confidence to representatives of the private sector that the Royal Thai Government viewed Bangladesh as an important partner both at the bilateral and multilateral levels. He reiterated that the Thai side stands ready to enhance relations and cooperation on various issues with Bangladesh. He also informed the participants that Thailand and Bangladesh agreed to hold the 7th Thai-Bangladesh Joint Commission on Cooperation Meeting (JC) in Bangladesh within this year. The JC meeting is a useful mechanism to review bilateral cooperation between the two countries in all key areas. Foreign Minister Kasit reassured that the Royal Thai Embassy in Dhaka would give full support to the Thai private sector that plans to do business or has problems in Bangladesh. He hoped that the private sector would benefit from the Agreement on Promotion and Protection of Investment and the Agreement on Double Taxation between Thailand and Bangladesh.

The participants discussed on trade and investment opportunities as well as problems on doing business in Bangladesh, including tariff and non-tariff barriers, visa, logistic and banking systems. The Foreign Minister informed the participants that the Foreign Ministry would discuss these issues with authorities concerned to find out the solutions and continued support for doing businesses in Bangladesh.
