Foreign Minister met with his counterparts at bilateral meetings at the margin of the UNGA 64th which included Montenegro, Peru and Swaziland

On 24 September 2009, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya met with his counterparts at bilateral meetings at the margin of the UNGA 64th which included Montenegro, Peru and Swaziland. He also met Special Assistant to the President of the United States and Senior Director for East Asian Affairs of National Security Council. In addition, he also took part in the Ministerial Breakfast of High-Level Event to commemorate the work of UNRWA (UN Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) and the Annual Meeting of the UN Democratic Caucus.

During the meeting with Foreign Minister Milan Rocen from Montenegro, both sides exchanged views on ways and means to strengthen the relationship especially on economic cooperation. Both side agreed to take up the issues on the Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement as well as the Avoidance of Double Taxation Agreement. They also agreed to enhance cooperation in tourism, especially cultural tourism. Foreign Minister Kasit agreed to send a Thai delegation to visit Montenegro in a near future to explore opportunities for the cooperation. Both sides agreed to consider assigning the respective proximity embassies to look after the work in the countries namely, Thai Embassy in Budapest and Montenegrin Embassy in Beijing.

During the meeting with his Peruvian counterpart, Mr. Jose Antonio Garcia Belaunde, both side share information on the latest status on the economic situation in the respective countries. The Thai side stressed interested in pursuing cooperation in areas such as cultural heritage. Both sides agreed on the necessity of enhancing the awareness about each other in the general public. In addition, the obstacle on the transportation of both passengers and goods between the two countries was also highlighted. The Peruvian added that other areas could include the exchange of information on criminals and crime networks as well as the consideration about the instrument on the transfer of prisoners.

During the meeting with Foreign Minister Lutfo E Dlamini of Swaziland, both sides exchanged views on ways and means to strengthen the relationship between Thailand and Swaziland. Foreign Minister Dlamini agreed to visit Thailand as guest of his Thai counterpart in November this year. The Swaziland’s Foreign Minister requested Thailand’s assistance to his country in the area of agro-business. The Thai side also expressed its interest in importing raw material from Swaziland.

During the meeting with Mr. Jeffry Bader, Special Assistant to the US President and Senior Director for East Asian Affairs of National Security Council, both sides exchanged views on the developments in the ASEAN region as well as the overview on the 2nd meeting of the Group of Friends of Secretary-General on Myanmar.

Later in the afternoon, Foreign Minister Kasit participated in the Annual Ministerial Meeting of the UN Democratic Caucus, which is a group of 17 member countries of the Community of Democracy (COD) and 20 NGOs.
