On 7-8 October 2009, Deputy Prime Minister Korbsak Sabhavasu will lead a delegation comprising members of the private sector and issue specialists from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce, Board of Investment and Tourism Authority of Thailand to “roadshow” Thailand in New Delhi and Mumbai, India.

The DPM is scheduled to give lunch talks to more than 200 key Indian businessmen in New Delhi and Mumbai. He is expected to build confidence by updating the audience on current political and economic developments in Thailand and highlight Thailand’s potential as an attractive destination and regional hub for Indian investment, thereby attracting even more Indian investment in the Kingdom. This message will be reinforced by the new investment opportunities arising from the second phase of the Government of Thailand’s Stimulus Package (Thailand: From Strength to Strength 2009), with a focus on investment in infrastructure and public services.

Each of the lunch talks, supplemented by presentations on investment and tourism, will be followed by business matching and networking activities of the Thai and Indian private sectors. Accompanying DPM Korbsak on this important mission will be more than 20 Thai businessmen from industries with the potential to expand their businesses with India ranging from electrical, chemical, logistics, textiles, spa services, real estate development, jewelry, food, processed meat, food and veterinary pharmacy and automotive industries.

In addition, DPM Korbsak has confirmed bilateral meetings with Mr. Kamal Nath, Indian Minister of Transportation, in New Delhi, Mr. B.K. Handique, Indian Minister for Development of North Eastern Region, and Mr. S.C. Jamir, Governor of Maharashtra, in Mumbai. These meetings should provide the opportunity to raise Thai-Indo issues of cooperation, including opportunities for Thai investment in India’s basic infrastructure development, trade issues and tourism promotion.

It should also be noted that Thailand and India are close to concluding their bilateral Free Trade Agreement, which will complement the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement recently signed on 13 August in Bangkok. Trade volume between two countries stood at USD 6 billion in 2008 and trade volume is expected to reach USD 10 billion in 2011.
