World News Tuesday October 13, 2009 13:29 —Ministry of Foreign Affairs

On 21 September 2009, a major earthquake struck the eastern Bhutan resulting in loss of lives as well as destruction to private properties. Much of the damage was also left in public infrastructure, forcing the Government of Bhutan to appeal for international aid and support.

As a gesture of goodwill and a token of friendship, Thailand has decided to contribute USD 30,000 in humanitarian assistance to the unfortunate victims of the earthquake and for rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. The assistance will be handed over to the Government of Bhutan by Miss Chompoonute Nakornthap, Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, during her visit to Bhutan to attend the International Conference on Deepening and Sustaining Democracy in Bhutan on 11 — 14 October 2009.
