On 18 November 2009, Mrs. Atchara Seriputra, Ambassador of Thailand to Spain, Mr. Sutuch Sethaboonsang, Thailand Trade Representative, and delegates from the Foreign Ministry witnessed the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cultural Cooperation between Mrs. Bilaibhan Sampatisiri, Vice President of the Siam Society, and Mr. Jesus Sanz Escorihuela, Director of Casa Asia, at the Casa Asia Headquarters in Barcelona, Spain.

The signing of this MoU is an important step in opening up new opportunities for the two organizations to work closely together to promote culture of both Thailand and Spain to their peoples. The cooperation will enhance relations between the two countries based on mutual benefits and good understanding of the civil societies. In addition, it will also contribute to the long-lasting development of culture, economy, education and tourism at the people-to-people level.

The ceremony took place during an exhibition of antique Thai woven cloth, arranged by the Siam Society under the theme “Through Woven Heritage: The Textiles of Thailand: An Exhibition of Cultural Fascination and Beauty” at the Casa Asia Headquarters. Co-sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the exhibition has been running since 23 October 2009 and attracted a lot of public interest.

Later, Mr. Sutuch led the delegation from the Foreign Ministry to pay a courtesy call on Mr. Ignasi Cardelus, Counsellor of the Mayor of Barcelona Office. During the meeting, both sides exchanged views regarding the bilateral relations between Thailand and Spain. They agreed that more could be done to develop bilateral relations through exchanges in the fields of cultural heritage, tourism, sports, etc.
