On 11 January 2010, Ms. Madurapochana Ittarong, Deputy Director-General of Department of Consular Affairs, presided over the ceremony to handover due financial compensation entitlements to the bereaved families of Thai nationals who passed away overseas, at the Department of Consular Affairs.
Ms. Madurapochana handed over the financial compensation entitlements to the families of the deceased Thai nationals comprising two workers who died in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) due to heart failure, and the other three workers who died in car accident in the United Arab Emirates. The total due financial compensation entitlements amounted to more than 5.5 millions baht. Previously, the Department of Consular Affairs had also presented due financial compensation entitlements in the amount of 5.6 millions baht to the bereaved families of three Thai workers who passed away in South Korea. As a result, the overall due financial compensation entitlements the Department of Consular Affairs has so far given to the entitled relatives amounted more than 11 millions baht.
On this occasion, Ms. Madurapochana also reported about the Consular Affairs Department’s achievement on protection of Thai nationals abroad. Throughout the year 2009, the Department together with 94 Royal Thai Embassies and Consulates-General had provided assistance to 3,169 Thai nationals in distress abroad. The cases included missing Thai nationals as well as those suffering from natural disaster, illness, family problem, exploitation and unfair employment.
