On 29 January 2010, Mr. Rawat Chatsudthipong, Vice President to the Executives Office of Mitr Phol Sugar Corp., Ltd., presented a donation of Baht 100,000 to Mr. Theerakun Niyom, Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The contribution was a part of the financial assistance from the Thai private sector to help the victims of earthquake in Haiti. The Foreign Ministry will coordinate with the United Nations (UN) in channeling Thailand’s contributions to help Haiti accordingly.
Mr. Theerakun expressed appreciation towards Mitr Phol Sugar Corp., Ltd. He also elaborated on Thailand’s three stages of assistance and reconstruction for Haiti: 1) emergency relief which includes the urgent shipment of 100 tonnes of rice out of the total 20,000 tonnes donated by the Royal Thai Government and the donation of 100,000 USD that had been forwarded to the Royal Thai Embassy in Mexico City to buy necessities such as food and medical supplies ; 2) the deployment of medical teams to help the affected Haitians; and 3) long-term reconstruction of basic infrastructures.
