Arrival of the first shipment of Thai rice to Haiti

On 2 February 2010 at 07.00 hrs. (local time in Haiti), Mr. Saroj Thanasanti, Minister Counsellor of the Royal Thai Embassy in Mexico, together with the Thai Advance Team to Haiti, handed over the first shipment of 100 tonnes of Thai rice for humanitarian assistance to Haiti, to Mr. George Aelion, Senior Donor Relations Officer, as representative of the World Food Program (WFP).

Thai rice, which was transported to Port-au-Prince Airport by special flight no. SOO888 of the Thai Airways International Plc., will be stored at the WFP`s warehouse in Haiti before distributing to 16 WFP Humanitarian Assistant Centers located in the areas affected by the earthquake. The WFP is currently coordinating with the agencies concerned to arrange an official handover ceremony of Thai rice to the Haitian Government.
