Thailand’s Commitments and Pledges for the UN Human Rights Council

On 19 February 2010, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya presided over the reception for launching Thailand’s Commitments and Pledges for her candidacy to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) Election for the term 2010 — 2013. The reception was well attended by diplomatic corps and representatives of international organization based in Thailand as well as members of the civil society in the Kingdom.

The Foreign Minister gave an opening remarks regarding the development of human rights situation in Thailand and the Royal Thai Government’s policies in promoting and protecting human rights at all level—domestically, regionally (ASEAN), and internationally. He also elaborated Thailand’s intention if elected as a member of the UN Human Rights Council. On a national level, the Royal Thai Government pledges to strengthen law enforcement in line with international human rights standards, and strengthen her efforts in the advancement of the rights of all vulnerable groups, particularly women, disabled persons and children. At regional level, Thailand will strengthen her active role and contribution to the development of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) to effectively promote and protect human rights of peoples within ASEAN. At international level, Thailand will promote cooperation and constructive dialogue in the HRC so that the Council can act as a real and effective mechanism for human rights protection.

Later, Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand to the United Nation, Geneva, Dr. Niran Pitakwatchara, Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand, and Dr. Sriprapha Petcharameesree, Thailand’s representative to the AICHR, also shared their opinion on the benefits Thailand will gain from being a member of the HRC for the first time.
