The deployment of an infantry battalion to the African Union/United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID)

The Cabinet’s decision on 6 May 2009 approved the deployment of an infantry battalion (800 troops) to the African Union/United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) in Sudan, as requested by the United Nations. Such decision is in line with the Royal Thai Government’s policy to support the United Nations in the maintenance of international peace and security and, as a responsible member of the international community, to do its utmost to help alleviate the plight of fellow human beings.

UNAMID was established on 31 July 2007 with the adoption of the Security Council Resolution 1769 (2007). UNAMID has the protection of civilians as its core mandate, but is also tasked with contributing to security for humanitarian assistance, monitoring and verifying implementation of agreements, assisting an inclusive political process, and contributing to the promotion of human rights and the rule of law.

The deployment of the Thai battalion to UNAMID would not only raise Thailand’s profile in the international arena, but also enhance the honour of the Royal Thai Armed Forces. At the same time, it would offer an opportunity for Thailand to strengthen bilateral ties with Sudan.

With the first batch expected to be deployed in July 2010, the Thai troops are currently undergoing vigorous training in order to build up their physical strength and necessary military skills to be prepared for the harsh conditions in Darfur, such as conducting patrols in sand storms, long-distance patrols on foot, convoy-protection operations, and cordon and search operations.
