International Conference on Changing Global Landscape and Its Implications on Regional Architecture

The Department of ASEAN Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, East Asia Academic Cooperation Council (EACC) and ASEAN University Network (AUN) will organize the International Conference on Changing Global Landscape and Its Implications on Regional Architecture on 5 March 2010 at the World Ballroom, Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at Central World, Bangkok.

The objective of the Conference is to exchange views on the factors contributing to the current global strategic landscape, evolving regional architecture, the roles of major and emerging powers in the region. The Conference will also discuss ways to enhance regional cooperation in East Asia and beyond.

During the past few decades, there has been an increase of cooperation among countries both bilaterally and multilaterally to respond their common transnational threats; namely, terrorism, climate change, infectious disease outbreaks, food and energy security. As for economic dimension, there has been an economic cooperation through various regional groupings to cope with economic crisis in the region. Besides, in Asia —Pacific, there has been a concerted effort to build ASEAN Community, an idea to build East Asian community (EAc), Asia Pacific community (APc), proposed by Japan and Australia, accordingly.

Prominent scholars, and experts from the US, Russia, India, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and ASEAN Member States are invited as speakers. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN Secretary-General will also deliver a keynote address on Evolving Regional Architecture: Challenges and Opportunities at the opening session.
