Thailand emphasizes education can help improve human rights

On 2 March 2010, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya delivered a statement at the High-Level Panel Discussion on the Draft UN Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training during the 13th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC). FM Kasit stressed the importance Thailand attaches to Human Rights Education and Training, which is an important part of the pledges and commitments the country has made in connection with its candidacy to the Human Rights Council for the term 2010-2013.

Thailand pledges to promote human rights education in all types of education and at all levels. The Royal Thai Government has initiated various policies that help create an enabling environment for life-long human rights learning process. This includes the promotion of human rights education, which Thailand regards as an essential tool, not only to prevent human rights violations and abuses, but also to consolidate democracy and the rule of law.

On the sidelines, FM Kasit was invited to address the Organization of Islamic Conference’s group meeting, in which the Foreign Minister informed the OIC members of the Royal Thai Government’s recent initiatives in the Southern Provinces as well as sought the support from the OIC members for Thailand’s candidature to the HRC. In addition, FM Kasit held bilateral meetings with Vice President of Colombia, Minister of Human Rights of Yemen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Zambia and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Albania. Discussions cover issues relating to the promotion of bilateral cooperation, including the candidature of Thailand to the HRC.

Furthermore, FM Kasit paid a courtesy call to the Director-General of the International Organization of Labour. Discussions cover the issues of Thailand’s stimulus measures to help boost income of workers and alleviate the impact of the financial and economic crises, and illegal migrant workers.
