Thai Government’s action toward major earthquake in Chile

Pursuant to the massive 8.8 Richter scale magnitude earthquake that hit the middle part of Chile on 27 February 2010 causing major loss of lives and tremendous damage to buildings and infrastructures in many areas of the country, the Royal Thai Government, during the cabinet meeting on 2 March 2010, approved the donation of 100,000 US dollars for humanitarian assistance to Chile.

In addition, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya sent a condolence message to their counterparts, President Michelle Bachelet of Chile and Foreign Minister Mariano Fernandez Amunategui respectively on the same day of the disastrous incidents.

The Royal Thai Embassy in Santiago has contacted with all Thai nations residing in Chile and confirmed that all of them are safe. At present, the Embassy allowed about 20 Thai nations, including 11 Thai students under AFS programme to stay at the Ambassador’s residence temporarily during this emergency situation.
