Thailand and Republic of Korea strengthen bilateral relations

On 18 May 2010, Mr. Panich Vikitsreth, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, had a bilateral discussion with Mr. Shin Kak-soo, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Korea, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK) after attending the 66th Session of ESCAP. Gist as follows:

Both sides discussed bilateral issues such as the 1st Policy Consultation between Thailand and Korea, which will be held in the ROK in June 2010. The Korean side agreed that this Policy Consultation would be a mechanism to strengthen cooperation between the two countries. Both sides will also have an opportunity to discuss and review the progress of their cooperation.

With regard to economic cooperation, Vice Foreign Minister Panich praised the ROK`s vision towards “Green Growth- Green Korea”, which support environmental friendly business sectors and projects. He noted that Thailand is interested to learn from the ROK`s expertise in the area. Both sides also exchanged views on other issues such as cultural exchange.

On this occasion, Vice Foreign Minister Panich briefed his Korean counterpart on the latest political situation in Thailand. The Royal Thai Government will try its best to resolve the current political situation peacefully. The ROK side expressed its concern and hoped that the situation will be back to normalcy at the earliest opportunity. Vice Foreign Minister Panich reaffirmed the Royal Thai Government’s measures to protect the safety of foreigners both residents and tourists, including the ROK nationals, in Thailand. The Thai authorities concerned have provided information on the current situation to the foreigners regularly. Both sides agreed to move forward to strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries.
