On 23 May 2010, Ms. Vimon Kidchob, Director-General of the Department of Information and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, informed the press about the statement issued on 21 May 2010 by Vietnam, in its capacity as Chairman of ASEAN, regarding the situation in Thailand. According to the said statement, the ASEAN member countries, while expressing their concerns over developments in the Kingdom, emphasised their support and solidarity with the people and the Government of Thailand in finding a peaceful solution to the present challenge, as well as expressed their support for a swift restoration of law and order, national reconciliation, and a return to normalcy.

The Spokesperson stated that the Royal Thai Government appreciates the concern expressed by other ASEAN member countries, particularly their support and solidarity. This, she said, was in line with the Government’s attempt to restore normalcy and move forward with the reconciliation process in accordance with the five point reconciliation plan previously announced by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, which underscored the importance of a participatory process involving all sectors of society. The Royal Thai Government also wishes to reassure its fellow ASEAN members that it would do its utmost to bring back peace to its people as soon as possible.
