On 7 June 2010, Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, attended the Special Event entitled “Security and Economic Cooperation in Eurasia in the 21st Century”, during his visit to Turkey for the 3rd Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), at Ciragan Palace Kempinski hotel, Istanbul, Republic of Turkey.

This special event was held in parallel with the 3rd CICA Summit initiating new interaction and cooperative relations between the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and CICA. Increased linkages between these two organizations will be beneficial to both, since they were established for the similar purposes of offering a stage for enhancing confidence building measures between member countries and for discussion on security in various dimensions, such as in economic, environmental, social and human dimensions. The discussion during the special event was wide-ranging and covered paths for cooperation among members on issues of mutual interest such as assistance for Afghanistan, energy security, connectivity on the economic and transportation fronts as well as democratic development.

On this occasion, Foreign Minister Kasit expressed Thailand’s strong support for this initiative between the two organizations. He said that Thailand, as the only ASEAN member which is also member of the OSCE and CICA, could share its experience from ASEAN’s evolution and integration with this forum. The Foreign Minister further mentioned ASEAN’s role in enhancing regional security, upholding democratic principles, promoting human rights and encouraging public participation. In his statement, Foreign Minister Kasit also urged members of the forum to encourage a liberal economy, energy security, regional connectivity, cooperation on counter-terrorism and prevention of drugs trafficking. He also reiterated Thailand’s unique position as a participant at OSCE, CICA, and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and Thailand’s readiness to further build linkages between them.
