World News Monday July 5, 2010 15:38 —Ministry of Foreign Affairs

On 2 July 2010, Ms. Vimon Kidchob, Director-General of the Department of Information and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, in response to media questions, said that — as it had been expected that the U.S. House of Representatives would be considering a draft resolution on the political situation in Thailand — the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a report from the Royal Thai Embassy in Washington, D.C. that the said draft resolution, proposed by Mr. Eni Faleomavaega, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Asia, the Pacific and the Global Environment, was passed on 1 July 2010. The resolution, among others, urges all parties involved in the political crisis to renounce the use of violence and to resolve their differences peacefully through dialogue as well as supports the goals of the 5-point roadmap of the Government of Thailand for national reconciliation. Prior to this, the Royal Thai Embassy had been in regular contact and had been providing the U.S. Congress with relevant information.

The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson added that the resolution not only reflects the friendship between the two countries but also shows that the United States understands the situation in Thailand. During the deliberation of the draft resolution, House members had voiced their support for the Government’s effort in addressing the demands of the protesters, expressed confidence in the effort in implementing the Prime Minister’s reconciliation plan, and viewed that as Thailand is a close friend, the United States should lend support to reconciliation in Thailand.
