Foreign Minister meets with members of the Thai community in Berlin

On 4 July 2010, during his official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya met with members of the local Thai community at the Royal Thai Embassy in Berlin.

Foreign Minister Kasit briefed the gathering about his visit to the Republic of Poland to attend the High-Level Democracy Meeting of the Community of Democracies during 2-4 July 2010, during which he reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to democracy as well as such issues as good governance, accountancy and transparency. As for his official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, he would be meeting with various cabinet ministers, parliamentarians as well as representatives from various sectors of society in order to promote bilateral cooperation and to inform them about the current situation in Thailand.

Regarding the political situation in Thailand, the Foreign Minister informed the Thai community of the background behind the recent unrest and the Government’s efforts to resolve the situation through the Prime Minister’s reconciliation plan. As the Government wanted to reform process to be as open and participatory as possible, the Foreign Minister also urged members of the Thai local community to participate by conveying their views and suggestions to the Government through both the Royal Thai Embassy in Berlin and the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Frankfurt.

Another issue discussed was the strengthening of Thai communities overseas. In this regard, the Foreign Minister reiterated the importance attached by the Government to helping Thai nationals overseas in need of assistance. He also urged Thais living in Germany to work closely with the Embassy, providing details of what type of help was required to the latter so that appropriate consular assistance could be provided.
