Foreign Minister to attend AMM / PMC / ARF in Ha Noi, Viet Nam

Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, is scheduled to attend the 43rd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting (AMM), the Post Ministerial Conferences (PMC), the 17th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and other related meetings, during 19-23 July 2010 in Ha Noi, Viet Nam.

These meetings are annual gathering of the ASEAN foreign ministers and participants from dialogue partners and Asia-Pacific countries, to a total number of 26 countries and 1 organization. The participants are 10 ASEAN members, 9 dialogues partners (U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea (ROK), Russia, and India), 1 organization (the EU), and Asia-Pacific countries (Papua new Guinea, Mongolia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), Pakistan, Timor-Leste, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka).

In addition, Vietnam has scheduled to host 3 more parallel meetings within various frameworks namely: (1) Working Lunch for Foreign Ministers of ASEAN and the ROK on “Seoul G20 Summit”; (2) Mekong-Japan Ministerial Meeting; and (3) the Lower Mekong (Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam)-US Ministerial Meeting.

The meetings will focus on cooperation among ASEAN member countries in implementing their relevent commitments so as to achieve the goal of forming the ASEAN Community by the year 2015. This is in consistence with theme “Towards the ASEAN Community : From Vision to Action” that has been set by Viet Nam from the start of its ASEAN chairmanship at the beginning of 2010.

The Meeting will also discuss important issues relating to working in line with the ASEAN Charter and ASEAN Community’s Plans of Action, enhancement of regional connectivity, exchange of views on international issues, discussion on regional architecture, and coordination of member countries’ positions on global issue such as economic recovery, sustainable development and climate change.

Among the outcome documents to be signed or adopted during the Meetings are 5-year Plan of Action for the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR), documents relating to Plan of Action in enhancing relationship between ASEAN and its Dialogue Partners (ASEAN-Canada and ASEAN-New Zealand), signing of the Instruments of Accession and Extension to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) for Turkey and Canada, and amending the TAC under the Third Protocol enabling the European Union (EU) to accede to the TAC.
