Thai and Indonesian Foreign Ministers promote bilateral relations and enhance the ASEAN regional architecture

On 12 July 2010, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. R. M. Marty M. Natalegawa, Indonesian Foreign Minister, paid a courtesy call on Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

On bilateral relations promotion, both sides agreed that the meeting of the 7th Joint Commission between Thailand - Indonesia be held during 1-2 September 2010 in Bali, Indonesia. Regarding fishery issue, the Thai side has drafted the Memorandum of Understanding on Fisheries Cooperation which would be discussed during the 6th JC Sub-Committee on Fisheries Cooperation between the two countries in order to set the standard operating procedures on fishery and enhance understanding of both public and private sectors on the matter. Both sides agreed also to support the people-to-people cooperation in the areas of fishery, agriculture and energy. On this occasion, the Thai Foreign Minister informed his Indonesian counterpart that Deputy Prime Minister Trirong Suwannakhiri is tentatively scheduled to visit Indonesia in late July to discuss the rice trade between Thailand and Indonesia.

As for the bilateral cooperation at the regional level, Foreign Minister Kasit stated that, during his visits to various countries and international organizations, he has exchanged views with his counterparts on the development of regional connectivity in order to gain best practices to be applied for ASEAN. During the upcoming 43rd ASEAN Ministerial Meeting and related meetings to be held in Hanoi, Vietnam, during 16-23 July 2010, both sides will push for the continuous discussions on regional connectivity, assistance by ASEAN missions in third countries to nationals of ASEAN member countries affected by conflict/crisis situations, peacekeeping and disaster management cooperation, all of which are under the ASEAN regional architecture.

Foreign Minister Kasit took this opportunity to thank his Indonesian counterpart for the support to Thailand’s candidature to the United Nations Human Rights Council, as well as understanding towards political situation in the Kingdom. Foreign Minister Natalegawa responded that Thailand has been proactive in sharing the information of its domestic situation with Indonesia, and has shown its flexibility in dealing with the situation so as to keep the nation moving forward. Indonesia understood the situation in Thailand and the Republic was the last country to issue travel advisory to its tourists who planned to visit Thailand.

After the meeting, Foreign Minister Kasit hosted a luncheon in honour of his Indonesian counterpart and his accompanying party at the Foreign Ministry.
