The Royal Thai Government has included youth representatives in Thailand’s delegation to the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) since 2007 in order to provide Thai youths with an opportunity to enhance their skills in the area of international relations as well as to strengthen their leadership skills. The inclusion of youth representatives in Thailand’s delegation to the UNGA is considered as a measure to develop human resources and is implemented in accordance with the UN solutions pertaining to the participation of youth in decision-making and the improvement of youth in international fora.
In 2010, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand has selected Ms. Pacharaporn Panomwon na Ayutthaya from Chulalongkorn University and Ms. Ploypailin Rupavijetra from Chiang Mai University as Thailand’s youth representatives to the forthcoming UNGA 65. The funds provided for the participation of the two youth representatives in the UNGA 65 for a period of three weeks during 2-23 October 2010 will be covered by the Foreign Ministry.
The Thai youth representatives’ assignment will mainly involve around issues pertaining to the Third Committee of the General Assembly, which deliberates on Social, Cultural and Humanitarian aspects. The two youths will have an opportunity to deliver a statement on behalf of Thai youths in the Third Committee. Moreover, the youth representatives will also participate in the work of the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the United Nations through attending a range of meetings and drafting reports.
Upon return, the two youths will be encouraged to speak to other students and to invite them to pay more attention to several key international issues confronting their generation.
