On 28 July 2010, Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, presided over the opening ceremony of “Workshop on Unresolved Maritime Boundaries: Gulf of Thailand Focus” held at the Foreign Ministry.
Foreign Minister Kasit stated in his opening remarks that this Workshop provided the Thai authorities concerned with an important opportunity to learn more about relevant process, techniques and regulations on maritime boundaries, and to exchange views on various aspects for common understanding on the matter. As for the unresolved maritime boundary issues, the Royal Thai Government reaffirmed its policy in supporting peaceful settlement through negotiation with good faith for the benefit of all parties concerned. He hoped that Thailand could play a leading role in such process.
The Workshop, being held during 28-29 July 2010, was jointly organized by the Department of Treaties and Legal Affairs, the Saranrom Institute of Foreign Affairs, and the British Gas Thailand PTE Co. Ltd as a platform for exchange of knowledge and experiences among officials of the Foreign Ministry as well as other government agencies dealing with the marine territorial disputes and negotiations on establishing joint development areas. The discussion also covered problems and obstacles on the matter, as well as conditions related to the development and exploration of oil and natural gas in overlapping areas.
