Foreign Minister Kasit’s opening remark at the roundtable discussion to sustain Asian dynamism

On 17 August 2010, Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered an opening remark at the “Roundtable Discussion on Global Economic Crisis and the Asia-Pacific Region: Sustaining Asian Dynamism in a Post-Crisis World” at the United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok, jointly organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Club de Madrid and the Casa Asia. The event was attended by a number of prominent figures, namely Ms. Noeleen Heyzer, Executive Secretary of ESCAP, Mr. Wim Kok, President of Club de Madrid, and Mr. Jesus Sanz, Director-General of Casa Asia. Gist as follows:

Foreign Minister Kasit stressed the importance on the three pillars of sustainable development, namely economic development, social development, and environmental protection. He viewed that the next phase of world economic growth can achieve sustainability, if such growth is more balanced, inclusive and green. He also underscored the coordinated and collective efforts at the regional and international levels which would lead to a healthy growth.

At the regional level, he pointed out that regional integration, regional bond market, and regional self-help initiatives are the three main mechanisms to help rebalance the global economic system. He also expressed his confidence that the framework of ASEAN+3 and the Chiang Mai Initiative Multilateralisation (CMIM) would serve as building blocks for a global solution and ensure an early global recovery. Foreign Minister Kasit reaffirmed that Thailand will continue its firm commitment to ASEAN and stands ready to share experience and expertise with other countries around the world.
