On 19 August 2010, at the Foreign Ministry, Mr. Kasit Piromya, Minister of Foreign Affairs, delivered a keynote address at the workshop on “Thailand’s Local Administration: Meeting Global Challenges”. Co-hosted by the Foreign Ministry and the Grassroots Development Foundation of Thailand, the workshop aimed at promoting a better understanding on good governance at the international level to the officials of the Local Administrative Organizations and municipalities, and leaders of the communities. Gist as follows:
Foreign Minister Kasit said that this workshop provided a good opportunity for the Local Administrative Organizations’ officials and communities leaders to share their experience and expertise with foreign professionals. He insisted that it is imperative for Thailand to learn from foreign experiences on ways and means to tackle the global challenges and cross-border problems such as protection of human rights, narcotic drugs and illicit trade suppression, promotion of basic education, promotion of women and children’s rights, and water resource management.
He reiterated that he has sought international’s support in the areas of good governance and best practices from leaders, ministers, senior officials as well as top executives of relevant institutions of countries he has visited. He also underscored that the Thai Foreign Ministry will continue to play its constructive role in using international best practices on good governance to enhance the effectiveness and transparency of the Thai local administration, and to improve the standard of living of the Thai grassroots.
