The National Economic and Social Development Committee (NESDC), recently, agreed to assign the Office of the NESDB to closely monitor the national economic situation to catch up with rapid changes both inside and outside the country, said Dr. Sipanondha Ketudat, NESDC Chairman.
Although it is a basic duty for the NESDB to monitor the national economic situation, several main factors have changed very quickly to which Thailand is unable to respond promptly. Hence, the NESDB, said Dr. Sippanondha, is requested to periodically conduct the overall economic report that recommends options for remedial measures of any emerging problems.
In years ahead, we can no longer focus on national matters. Every country is inter-connected, so we have to focus more on linkages between Thailand and other countries in ASEAN, East Asia, and the entire global community. We are now in the Globalization era, so we have known how to properly position ourelves. Thailand is on a prime geographical location in this region, proper to become trade and economic center which will be useful for the country and the entire region.
Dr. Sippanondha also added that Thailand's national development is now on the right track, focusing on human development. The global community, especially the United Nations, now emphasizes this concept as a major development guideline among developing nations. However, the 8th Plan has to emphasize the national economic development, and we have to adjust the Plan's targets to fit into the current economic surrounding after the Baht float.
On this occasion, NESDB Secretary-General Wirat Wattanasiritham disclosed that the Cabinet just approved the new NESDC appointment. At a party to congratulate the new NESDC members, Prime Minister Gen. Chavalit Yongchaiyuth pointed out his personal comment that it is unnecessary for Thailand to emulate the Western ideas for national development. Thailand, in fact, is an agricultural economy and also specialized in services, so we had better develop our strength to become a leader in service sector.
NESDB Secretary-General, in his capacity as member and secretariat of NESDC, further added that the NESDC previously focused on a main duty to provide recommendations on investment projects and capital, including relevant development master plans. It spent less time to monitor the national economic policies which were mainly supervised by the Council of Economic Ministers. Besides, the Office of the NESDB has served as secretariat to several national committees, chaired either by Prime Minister or Deputy Prime Minister. In this respect, the NESDC assigned the NESDB Office to conduct periodical reports on performance of these committees to be used as additional data for the NESDC to consider the national development trend, said Mr. Wirat.
