Professor Dr. Sippanondha Ketudat, the Chairman of the National Economic and Social Advisory Council Member Recruitment Committee, chaired the selection-within-group meeting for recruiting members of the National Economic and Social Advisory Council, on July 2, 2001, at Prince Palace Hotel, Bangkok.
The Chairman started that this meeting was considered as one of the historical events that 99 members of the National Economic and Social Advisory Council (NESAC) were recruited from the agricultural production and the resource base groups in total of 16 members each, the industrial production and the service groduction groups 17 members each, the social sector group group 19 members, and the expert group 14 members.
During February 27 to April 28, 2001, Office of the National Economic and Social Advisory Council advertised the recruitment for organizations that proposed candidates. There were 6,215 organizations applied for the recruitment. After the examination of the Committee, 2,738 qualified organizations proposed 3,659 candidates.
Six Sub-Committees were appointed to select these candidates. The number of selected candidates must be at least 3 times higher than the exact number of members in each group so they were 658 candidates. Then, they gathered in the selection-within-group meeting for recruiting 99 members of the Council.
The selection was followed the Article 6 and 7 of the National Economic and Social Advisory Council Act and the Committee's regulations with concerning of the transparency.
Mr. Sansern Wongcha-um, Secretary-General of the Office to the National Economic and social Development Board, addressed that this meeting indicated the purpose of the Constitution that was emphasized the National Economic and Social Advisory Council Act especially in part of final selection-within-group for recruiting members of the National Economic and Social Advisory Council.
The responsibilities of the NESAC members were to propose advises and suggestions about economic and social problems to the Cabinet, and the recommendations about the National Economic and Social Development Plan and other plans as mentioned in the law.
The Office of the National Economic and Social Advisory Council would investigate the qualifications of the candidates before proposing the name list to the Prime Minister and announcing in the Government Gazette.
