Recently, at the Dej Sanithwongse conference room, the office of NESDB, Dr. Sippanondha Ketudat, chairman of the National Economic and Social Development Committee (NESDB), accompanied by Mr. Wirat Wattanasiritham, NESDB Secretary-General, NESDB executives and officials greeted Mr. Dhanin Chearavanont, Chairman of Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group Co, Ltd., and CP executives on the first visit to the office of the NESDB.
Mr. Dhanin's mission included Dr. Ajva Taulanonda, President of Telecomasia Cooperation, Plc. and Mr. Abhaichon Vacharasinthu, Assistant Vice-president in operate relation co-ordination of CP Group Co, Ltd.
On his visit to the NESDB, CP Chairman was invited to deliver a briefing on CP Investment in the Neighboring countries and Guidelines for Business Cooperation. CP successful experience, as quoted by Mr. Dhanin, was attributed to application of modern technology, considered useful for a developing state.
For successful agri-business, according to Mr. Dhanin, crop varieties are very essential which would make the investment worthwhile. It is also necessary to study beforehand the market trend and demand so as to produce the right thing for the market.
Mr. Dhanin also expressed his comment about the recent Baht float and its effects on the entire economy. He attributed the current economic slump to over-spending in both public and private sectors during the bubble economy.
The government, Mr. Dhanin suggested, should focus on certain product lines which Thailand has comparative advantages. Basically, Thailand is an agriculture-based economy, but we are not so keen on industrialization. Hence, we had better cooperate and think about what we should trade in the world market.
The industrial sector will play a big role in generating foreign exchange earning in this regard, and the government support is greatly needed to enable the private sector to seek overseas loans. The private sector alone could not handle this task successfully.
Mr. Dhanin also expresesd his impression of the Eighth Plan emphasizing human development as the main target. Human capital will be very significant for economic development in years ahead, but he still wonders while some of the new generation of people refuse to become a teacher.
At the end of his briefing, Mr. Wirat Wattanasiritham, NESDB Secretary-General, presented gifts to Mr. Dhanin as a token of appreciation for his briefing.
