Dr.Sumet Tanivejkul, NESDB Secretary-General, led the representatives from public and private sectors to organize an International Seminar entitled "Private Sector's Roles for Economic Development" at Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia between September 1-6, 1996 in order to promote Economic Cooperation Between Thai and Mongolian private sector. This was an occasion for Mongolia to open up the discussion with the Thai private sector on the matter as concerned with its high potential products.
After returning from Mongolia, Dr.Sumet Tantivejkul discolsed that diplomatic relationship between Thailand and Mongolia has long been established since 1974. The Office of the NESDB, as designated by the Council of Economic Ministers, was then assigned to formulate the Thai- Mongolian Economic and Technical Cooperation Master Plan, which was approved in August 1996.
NESDB Secretary-General stated that the Mongolian government requested the Office of the NESDB to organize a mission where by the private sector from both sides could meet and sit together to work out some programs. As a result, Dr.Sumet Tantivejkul pointed out that the Mongolian side would like to develop first in the areas of jewelly industry and tourism. For that matter, the training programs would be organized at the Hotel and Tourism Training Institute of the Tourism Authority of Thailand for trainers from the Mongolian Tourism Training Institute.
Meanwhile, the Thai Airways International PCL agreed to send the draft of Interline Agreement to the Mongolian International Airline & Tours (MIAT) so that adjustments could be made on the flight schedule arrangement between the Thai International Airlines (TG) and the MIAT. On this occasion, Mongolia has expressed its interest in managing chartered flights to Thailand. For that matter, TG and MIAT would organize study tours to exchange presonnel between TG and MIAT.
With regard to the establishment of the Thai Consulate in Mongolia, Dr.Sumet Tantivejkul revealed that the officals from the Thai Embassy in Beijing had an opportunity to discuss in further details with the high ranking officials of Mongolian Foreign Affairs Ministry for the appointment of the suitable Thai Honorary Consulor in Mongolia in the very near future.
As for agriculture development, the matter was discussed among representatives from both sides. However, on the Thai side, Charoen Pokphand Group was interested in investment in the area of livestock industry, meat processing product and leather industry.
Dr.Sumet Tantivejkul lastly stated that the seminar on "Private Sector's Roles for Economic Development in Mongolia helped promote Thai- Mongolian Economic and Technical Cooperation so that the private sector from both sides could have an opportunity to exchange ideas and obtain detailed information on investment without further delay.
