NESDB Deputy Secretary-General Somchet Teracoop recently gave an interview that the office of the NESDB wil hold an international symposium on "Thailand's Southern Seaboard : A New Gateway to the Global Economy" on March 20, 1997 at the United Nations conference center, Bangkok.
Mr. Somchet added that the Southern Seaboard Development Project (SSB) has been an important element in the economic development strategy of the Government since 1989. This ambitious proposal includes the establishment of a new gateway to the global trade network via the development of industrial parks and ports on both sides of Southern peninsula, connected by a "landbridge". Intermodal connections between the two deep-sea ports will comprise a new motorway, rail links and a crude oil pipeline. The heavy initial emphasis on the oil-related activities and deep-sea ports is expected to be a catalyst for other industrial development in the SSB area.
In this regards, the office of the NESDB was granted with an amount of Bt 25 million to undertake the feasibility studies on the SSB ports and industrial complex development, which includes the port of Tai Muang on the west coast and its hinterland industrial area, as well as the port of Sichoh on the east coast and its hinterland industrial area. Funding for the studies comes from the Thai Government budgets and the United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). The NESDB has commissioned a consortium of Moffatt & Nichol International, Inc., Wilbur Smith Associates, Inc. (USA), and Asian Engineering Consultants Corp., Ltd. (Thailand) to conduct the studies commenced in July 1997.
As for oil-related activities development, the Petroleum Authority of Thailand (PTT) hired a consultant to expand an earlier feasibility studies of its pipeline project. It is to integrate the petroleum sector developments with the recently completed ports location and industrial development studies. The main elements of the PTT development program are the crude-oil pipeline system project and the oil refinery and petrochemical complex project.
Up to now, the feasibility studies have been completed. Hence, the office of the NESDB in cooperation with USTDA and PTT, will hold the symposium to present the conclusions and recommendations of the various studies of the SSB development project, as well as to distribute and inform the public and private bodies about the details of the project in order to encourage cooperation among them.
Approximately 300 participants in the seminar will include representatives from Thai government agencies and state enterprises; local and international industrial entrepreneurs; diplomatic agencies; chambers of commerce; international organization; and the press.
